DOGS ABC

The Sporting Group

The Sporting Group - This group consists of dog breeds that were bred to hunt birds in the woods and in the water and many dogs in this group actively participate in hunting and other sports. Laymen commonly refer to dog breeds in this group as hunting dogs, gun dogs, game dogs, or bird dogs. These dog breeds tend to be friendly and make good, well-rounded companion dogs. The breeds in this group include the Pointers, Retrievers, Setters and Spaniels. These dog breeds are generally active and alert and require regular exercise for their health and happiness.

Dog breed standards that define "ideal" dogs in these breeds can be found at the AKC website, though bear in mind there is rarely a dog that measures up exactly to every specification of its standard.
