DOGS ABC

The Herding Group

The Herding Group - This group consists of dog breeds that were bred to help ranchers and shepherds herd their livestock. The herding group is the AKC's newest, created in 1983 with dog breeds that were formerly in the Working group. The dog breeds in this group share the common ability to control the movement of other animal - including their owners oftentimes. Although herding breeds are seldom actually used with farm animals anymore, their natural instincts compel them to gently direct their owners and their families to where they think they should be going. Overall, dog breeds in the herding group are intelligent and make wonderful pets in addition to responding well to training. Dog breeds in this group include the Briard, Collie, German Shepherd Dog and Old English Sheepdog

Dog breed standards that define "ideal" dogs in these breeds can be found at the AKC website, though bear in mind there is rarely a dog that measures up exactly to every specification of its standard.
